I currently live in St Kilda and absolutely love the location. A short trip to the city or Richmond and chapel street is almost at my door step. I have 2 Woolworths/Coles only 1km away and the option of Prahran and South Melbourne markets a stones throw away.
I can walk to the beach, the St Kilda botanic gardens and there is a plethora of restaurants to choose from.
Unfortunately have had to go to hospital a few times and the Alfred has been amazing.
The only downside to St Kilda is the homeless and the junkies. They constantly harass you so much I have to walk with sunglasses on and head phones in just to avoid any chance of eye contact. I have had 3 run ins in the last few months and it is definitely worse in the warmer months.
But other than that it is a great place to live.
