Is Brighton a safe place to bring up a family?

Hi, Looking at possibly moving here and want to know what crime was like in this area?
What schools are nearby? What sporting facilities?
We currently live in a country area, on the edge of a growth area, in Vic. Very quiet and my children take the bus to a private school.
They also do lots of sport. Have to move to SA. So looking for similar, but by the sea! Help much appreciated.
