The Cow Hollow neighborhood in San Francisco is relatively safe for a big city neighborhood. You are removed from the worst neighborhoods in SF by a couple of other neighborhood so you're usually safe.
That said, the city is the city, so you definitely should stay alert and not become overly complacent about your personal security. This is not Mayberry.
