Ravenswood by the sea. Bogan central and as the someone who lives there told me the G'sP are doing there best to kill the people of georgetown. The house prices are cheap for a reason.

Thanks, stevem37, for your erudite contribution. Couldn't disagree more. Been in GT for a few months now and it's great. Sure, it's not Point Piper or Vaucluse; the air's cleaner for one thing. In speaking to representatives of various bodies in town, there's a lot of positives going on behind the scenes and hard work being undertaken to make change happen. Haven't visited a GP yet, but the local vets look to have a healthy business going.

Hi Andy, we moved from outside Sydney and didn't have anything lined up. Took about two months to find a job I wanted locally; Launceston has more to offer if willing to commute 40-50min.

Thanks for the input Ian :-) we are from South West Sydney and George town just caught our attention, it looks so nice. My wife is on the George town page on Facebook and she tells me the community spirit is strong. It just looks amazing especially as we have twin baby boys but obviously employment is the gamble I suppose.

The problem with small town shopping is not limited to George Town, it's universal across much of Australia. Even if rents are lower in small towns, retailers' purchasing power is limited, so they have to charge more, so people drive to the "big smoke" for better prices.

Pleased to say that George Town in the summer is lovely .
Had a new driveway put in and my back garden looks better by having trees planted and an irrigation system put in so dont have to worry about the garden when away .
Everyone is lovely and friendly and recommended it to family and friends wanting a sea change .
Still would like a few extra shops but who knows what can happen in the future.
Still think George Town is lovely to live in .

Update finished doing our fencing round the property changed from wood to Colour bond
Georgetown has really changed over the last 18 months and very community focused .
Property value has gone up as have rental .
It still costs a lot for workman to do jobs in Georgetown . But then you dont have Sydney prices .
Best advice if you want to be mortgage free Georgetown is perfect . Its a hidden gem and would recommend to move here while you can afford a property Mortgage free either built or deposit and pick your property design.

aileneh I'll take a punt and tell you why they sold it. The houses are cheap in Georgetown for a reason. People burn houses down there for a laugh. Renters damage the property regularly in Georgetown. Finding a tradesman to come and do jobs under a $1000 in Launceston is difficult getting a tradesman to go to Georgetown would be even harder. She probably found out that calling the police or ambulance to come to Georgetown is going to take many hours if they come at all.

Is there much crime in George Town? Looking at a place on Main Rd. Single lady with a couple of dogs. I'm more keen to live in an owner buyer area and less rentals in the street.

What street ? I'm sure a German shepherd would be adequate....

We came to George Town from an outback town in WA, where crime was rampant. We had vandalism and attempted break-ins from the inhabitants of the far end of our street, yet the end we lived on was mainly government workers including police! GT, or parts of it, have issues, but there are some really nice areas to live in and having lived all over Australia reckon GT can't be beaten for real estate value and proximity to amenities. Just avoid the Boganvilles and you'll be right.

I'd like to see sources for the claim that George Town crime is double that of Launceston. There has been little impact on my part of town (southside) so far although I see a bit of stuff posted on Facebook. The town I left to come to Tasmania is on the coast between Geraldton and Exmouth. I still get the FB notifications from the town crime page and if anything it has got worse, with the latest craze being kids and youths throwing rocks at car windows. Strange in one way because there was a big new police station being built when I was there and no doubt it's in use now.

Im looking to buy there.... not too far from the water is that a bad area. Agents wouldnt own up to the bad areas?

Agreed. My wife just had her bike stolen after staying one night here. This town is rough and full of ferals from what I can tell. Every woman has tats up and down their arm like theyve done time.

which is the right side of the main road? Depends whether heading toward the river or away from it.

Probably means coming in to town, so the east side, south of the RSL.

Hangon so 47 Main St would be on the right side going into town. So is that the rough side? I was told that immediate area was safe. Even though it's sort of central but south. I was told the north is rough and more crime.

I have lived and worked in George Town for nearly thirty years. There is an amazing community spirit and the people are very friendly and welcoming. I have been involved with the localarts community since moving here and the cultural aspect of the town is quite lively and represented in all aspects of music, painting and drawing, quilting, history, dance etc. A highlight for me is the annual forlk festival that in 2011 will celebrate its 20th year. Artists such as Eric Bogle, Danny Spooner, Nick Charles, among many have appeared at the festival. How lucky are we to live in one of the most beautiful places in Tasmania where the scenery is stunning, the lifestyle one to be envied and only 45 minutes away from a major city? If you have heard unkind things about our town, put them with a grain of mustard and realise that every place has an element that is less than savoury and the best thing to do is to get on and live your life to the fullest and George Town is one of the best places in Tasmania to do that.

Hi, we are looking to purchase in George Town but have our reservations after reading some of the negative comments on here. Would you consider Cimitiere St a rough part of the town?

We are in mid 50s and bought there the only thing George Town needs is the council to tidy some areas and more people to come and invest work wise in the area.
Great opportunity for young people to start up new business.
Decent tea rooms maybe showing local art to encourage tourists to buy .
Decent pub for familys not drunks.
Good artistic shops with clothes that tourists and locals can buy.A Target or K Mart to give employment and chance for young people to work .
Everyone we meet are really friendly and buying before prices rise mean you can make it your forever home.

JenniferS there were lovely tea rooms down opposite the Monument. Closed, presumably due to lack of business. The Pier is hardly full of drunks, and the meals are great (especially the Senior's meals). No chance of a larger department store, we're very lucky to have a Woolies given the population and lack of through traffic (since GT's essentially at the end of a peninsula).

Its good to read positive comments about George Town, I am considering retiring in a few years, or at least semi retiring (am Registered Nurse) and want to get back to a quiet country area. Have lived in Tasmania before, years ago, and have now started to look at quiet areas, George Town is one that I am considering. Thank you. :)

Me, too. I've been looking for a place that is flat so I can walk to shops, etc; which has a range of services such as P.O., chemist, GP, shops, hospital and George Town fits the bill. The only drawback for me is the distance to Launceston (which I know is a very Tasmanian thing to say seeing it's only 40 minutes on one of the best highways in the state).

The best thing? Land prices start under $50,000 and houses start at just over $100,000.

I am considering seriously moving to George Town as i need a cooler climate for health issues. I am alittle bit worried about the lack of policing burglaries and vandalism comments i have read. The properties are very reasonable to rent. I am a single person on disability and value what little belongings i own and wonder just how bad the criminal element is. I currently live in Qld.

Hi Kate, I too am considering moving to the area but have reservations about the drug and crime elements. I know that these problems exist in all parts of Australia but how prevelant in this area is my concern. I think the best thing to do is to fly down and get a first hand impression. Brian

It depends on what part of town you buy in. Generally the south is more salubrious than north or east of the town centre. Just north of George Town is Low Head which is a wonderful place but pricey (by Tassie standards) however, you can find uninterrupted ocean views at Bell Buoy Beach (which is advertised under Low Head) from $65,000 for land of around 1000 square metres.

Hello I have lived in George Town my entire life to the negative reviews they were some what old, in the last few years many houses including housing commision have been sold off which has been driving the riff raff out of town! I believe the local council have had a part to play here as there was word through the grape vine that the idea was to sell housing commision off to prospective buyers and clean up the area which is successfully working, attracting more retirees or people buying holiday homes. There is a holiday home an old house right across me that no one has entered, I have had no problems my entire life here, of course if you have bad neighbours, my advice however is before you purchase or a rent a place do some homework, prior to me buying my home I studied my neighbours habits, I drove past more then enough times to see what the street was like, in the end it's where you pick is how you will be effected, if you buy next to someone that is loud usually then I am sorry to say but you are kind of asking for it, a little investigation goes a long way. Having said all that I will now tell you briefly about me I am a mature 33 year old professional , having been in the military I am very neat and quiet should you require a room I have a double on offer for 130.00 a week whether you would like to stay just to get the feel of the area you could get in touch with me via my ad here https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-view-details.html?adId=1124632840 . This town often has an unforeseen investment opportunity being a 5 to 10 min drive to the beach. I actually think it's silly to miss out on such a great opportunity personally, buy 100 000 dollar house flip the house for profit, buy a house rent it out, in a few years the investment is paid off plus a return, people are mad not to in my opinion. I said it when I was a child to my parents when houses were worth 15 000 no joke, now they are 150 000, my uncle paid 30k for his house and a shack out at Beachford for 40k, you can only imagine what both are worth right now! sorry but I have to laugh. I really do not understand because if I had 500 000 I would buy 5 houses in this town and double my money.

We bought an investment property 5 years ago, we bought on the South side of George Town, the place has been tenanted all the 5 years except a couple of month, if we were to sell tomorrow we'll be making a loss as property prices have slumped, beware of dodgy real estate salesmen that promise you the earth.
George Town is a nice little town with nice surroundings rental profits are not bad taking into account how cheap you bought the property.
The rental has never been broken in, some of the above statements are inflated.
We bought a block of land at Low Head where we will build our home and retire there.
We live in Ipswich (Queensland) and I cannot deal with the summers up here, too hot.
If you want to retire, this is a very nice area.

We bought a house in George Town sight unseen in 2009, which was a high point in the market. It was rented for six years, until we moved in ourselves in 2015 after many years in employer-supplied housing. I retired unexpectedly early and had nowhere else to live. We couldn't rent because of our large number of pet birds. We didn't like the area (around the muralled water tank) and had feral kids coming over the back fence stealing stuff. Spent a fortune doing it up (with a lot of damage from tenants) and sold it in 2015 for little more than we'd paid for it six years earlier. We bought a slightly run-down place southside, with stunning views, and have been far happier with the neighbourhood. You really need to be careful where you to buy in George Town. Having recently visited Devonport and their "bogan central" and been to similar suburbs in Hobart and Launceston, it seems to be a peculiarly Tasmanian thing. We had neighbours several doors down who rode loud motorbikes at all hours, but they're now gone (or in gaol, it's reputed they were drug dealers). The small town issue of having limited shopping amenities is not restricted to GT, Launy is close enough that smaller shops selling similar goods locally can't compete, but it is sad to see the large number of empty shops, especially the eyesore Chickenfeed store opposite Woolies which will eventually be totally covered in wood sheeting once the vandals have worked their way through all the windows. I sense change in GT, especially with a more switched on shire council, but would dearly love to see a greater focus on arts and crafts and more "cerebral" activities and community groups like Latrobe has. Finally, I worked in weather for many years and chose GT in part due to climate: we have few frosts and escape the very hot days that much of the rest of Tasmania can suffer from occasionally in summer, although even then it pays to pick the right part of GT as I've seen it six degrees hotter coming into town than it was at my house (from the car's ambient temperature gauge). The downside is the wind, which can play havoc in the garden.

Are there shops and other services in the areas you mention? They don't come up on Google maps or when I Google those areas. They do look excellent, but I'd prefer somewhere I don't have to use the car to get to the shops all the time.

There are no shops southside, alas. There was an IGA Express and a fish 'n' chip shop. The former has been closed for years, the fisho more recently. You can get fish, and fish 'n' chips at the "fish factory" southside though, although not open for dinner. There are some "nice" areas closer to Woolies. It's worth remembering that Low Head has no shops at all either, they're further from town, and that's really upmarket compared to GT.

It really depends on the part of town you choose. I've lived northside (well, "eastside" really) and southside and they're chalk and cheese. I know what you mean about drug deals, but these days it's hard to find a place where that doesn't happen. Even southside there was a nest of drug dealers but they gone and hopefully in gaol.
