"Family Friendly Secret!"
Figtree is an amazing suburb for families in the illawarra. There is plenty of parks and walks and you can't go wrong with the schools. There is also a great shopping centre and the connection to the Motorway is perfect. It is also less than 10 min drive to the CBD and you have SO many beaches to choose from. There is 20+ beaches along the coastline here so no chance of them getting overcrowded. There are a lot of sydneysiders making the move and a lot of new development/renovations going on! It's the sort of suburb I grew up in as a kid, where you know everyone and the kids can safely play in the streets. It is a huge suburb so some areas have some housing development but the Mt Keira/West Wollongong/Nareena Hills sections are lovely. 10/10

"Great value for space, privacy, convenience and family living"
I and my partner have lived in St Leonards, Alexandria, Ashfield, Hurstville, Penrith ( :D ) and then for the past 8 years in Figtree, while working in Sydney CBD - we moved around for various reasons. We first moved to Penrith when we had our first child... but this was perhaps the worst suburb because of demographics and low quality of life from our experience even though we thought we lived in a "posh" area of Penrith.
We decided to move down south after looking around for 3 long years of search as we realised our big mistake living in Penrith (well because we didn't want to spend much!!). We have a number of friends in various suburbs around Wollongong (Bulli, Woonona, Balgownie, Wollongong, Mangerton and Figtree) so we looked at almost all suburbs within 10 minutes driving distance from Bulli so its easier to see friends.
Balgownie was definitely very nice but very pricey (relative to others). Bulli and Woonona are so overrated beach side suburbs - a lot of unemployed and junkies...and fairly flat! Wollongong is of course convenient but unless you live in North Wollongong, you'll be living with people who rely on centrelink payments! :) Mangerton is quite nice with hilly quiet areas (except around Tony's chicken where housing is :) !) But all these years we still don't quite understand why Mangerton is relatively pricey compared to Figtree because they are practically just next suburb and the property prices in Figtree are more affordable!
Now here's why we think Figtree is a great suburb for families and particularly for those who work/commute to Sydney :):
1. You pay less (at least for now until people start to realise this, particularly with more WFH arrangements post covid) for the space, security and privacy you get - compared to suburbs like Mangerton, Wollongong, Bulli, Wonoona, Balgownie and other suburbs north of Wollongong.
2. The drive to Wollongong station is just 10 minutes from my 1000sq 5 bed, 3 bath, 4 car park property to when i step out of the car at Wollongong train station! Trains from Wollongong are mostly express (that means less stops - and literally just 8 stops to Sydney Central station). Yes it takes 1.5 hours train trip from Wollongong to Central. However, you won't have to change trains (compared to say if you lived in Wonoona or Bulli) and waste time! We pretty much get comfy seats from Wollongong station and that means we can sleep/rest well compared to when you catch a train from Thiroul where you oftentimes have to stand (because the good seats are now taken!! :D). So for me the travel is so much better compared to the other suburbs I lived in before and compared to other suburbs north of Gong.
3. Figtree is a hilly suburb with fantastic mountain or ocean views (depending on your property location of course).
4. Lots of families and friendly/helpful people which is relatively safer compared to the other suburbs.
5. Yes Figtree is not a beachside suburb. But hey, the beach is just 12 minutes drive! We only go to the beach on most weekends as we work on weekdays so its not like we are missing out on the beach side life style. If anything, we appreciate it more and still convenient (not like when we were at Penrith or even Hurstville where it feels going to the beach was a struggle :)!
6. Abundant of high quality/very well ranked schools!
I hope this helps!

"Family friendly suburb with everything you need close by"
Figtree is an awesome place to live. Within 5 minutes of the Wollongong CBD by car it sits on the fringe's of Wollongong itself. A family friendly and tree lined suburb - hence the name - it has many great schools, parks and amenities. Figtree Grove Shopping Centre has everything you need with Coles, Woolworths, a 24hr K-mart plus a host of specialty stores to fulfill all your needs. Figtree Junior Soccer Club is one of the largest and best run clubs on the coast and there are plenty of gyms, sports fields and even a dog friendly park. Great access to the M1 and local buses & trains means transport is never an issue for those needing to commute - as is access to a range of local beaches. Figtree really does have it all - and at an affordable range of prices for a variety of homes too.

"There have always"
There have always been mixed thoughts about this place. Some people love it for its peace and quiet with the abundance of greenery, whereas others might find it a bore with not that many activities to partake in especially at night. I reckon families with children would adore this cozy neighbourhood.
"Great suburb, family-friendly place to live"
Moved into the area 2 years ago from Western Sydney.
Love all the parks, great for children.
Shopping is good with a Westfields that has both Coles and Woolies and also a Kmart, pretty much has everything you need.
There are buses that leave from the Princes Hwy that go into central Wollongong and the beach.
Glad I moved here.

"Wonderful family suburb with great facilities"
Have lived in Figtree for 10 years and absolutely love it. Having our own Westfield shopping centre is fantastic. There are great restaurants, good doctors and medical facilities close by. Figtree Private Hospital is first class.
Schools in the area perform well, Figtree Heights Primary has less than 300 students and has a real community feel.
The beach is only a 5-10 minute drive away. Beautiful views of Mt Keira from many homes in Figtree. You've only got to look at the area on google earth to see how lush and green it is in comparison to other areas of Australia and even Sydney. The people here are very friendly and I would consider to be middle - high class. It's certainly one of the best suburbs in the Illawarra.

"The Best location"
Haved lived in Wollongong for many years, Figtree has to be most family orientated suburb in close proximity to Wollongong Central .Lots of open space ,wide streets and good size blocks of land. Excellent Shopping ( including Westfield ),transport and easy access to the Freeway for the Sydney Commuters .
Schools ,your choice of several Primary Schools and easy access to Secondary Schools in adjoining areas .
Views to the Mountains / escarpment from most streets .
I dont think you can beat this suburb of choice .
Why should you listen to me !
Well, I Sell Real Estate for a living and I know a good " thing "
