Reviews of Illawong, NSW
"Home for the white flight out of Sydney"
Fairly large Anglo-Australian population with hints of European and Lebanese people.
Not a particular classy or cultured suburb. Public transport is awful, so you must own a car and enjoy driving long distances.
Good for people that like to show off big and overpriced empty houses and those that have inflated egos. It's filled with beautiful trees, rivers, nice parks and fresh air! The shops are lacking but Westfield Miranda is about 20 minutes away.
Young families are generally friendly and full of spirit. If you're a nature and family person, this is a great suburb, but if you're young and want more excitement, stick to communities around the Sydney CBD. Crime is fairly low, traffic is quite good and drunken behaviour is common. I recommend this place if you want peace and quiet and a sense of community. Good for people over the age of 40.

It's supposedly in the Sutherland Shire, so none. Sophisticated and stylish are not words I would use to describe the communities in the Sutherland Shire. Racist and Xenophobic are probably better words.
Moved in here for about a year now and everyone here has been beautiful and welcoming. Whilst a car is necessary in Illawong, it's evident from your comments that your views are well coloured by your perceptions of Sutherland Shire more generally. Generally, it a quiet suburb that contains a mixture of established, older couples and young families who are now moving into the area as Baby Boomers downsize. Convenient local shops with beautiful bushland and water scenery make this place a beautiful place to live, especially given its proximity to the CBD.
J Knox you sound like you dont really belong here anyhow, you seem a bit full of yourself
J Knox, how can you write about 'inflated egos' in a way which makes you sound like you have an inflated ego?
J knox whats ur area like

"The problem with peninsular suburbs like Illawong and Bonnet Bay"
The main problem with areas like Illawong, Woronora and Bonnet Bay is that they are isolated (especially in the frequent event of bushfires in the area). There is one road in and one road out which can be a really scary experience if you have a bushfire racing towards the peninsular! Also areas like Menai and Illawong are not on rail lines and buses are erratic. However, the Menai marketplace is quite a good (but not extensive) shopping centre with some nice restaurants.

"Great Family Suburb - safe quiet and well located between Georges and Woronora Rivers"
Excellent place to live for people from all walks of life with schools, shops and parks easily accessed for families. Excellent bus routes to Padstow, Menai and Sutherland. Ubundance of parks and bushlands. Some great water views from blue chip locations and bush views from almost every street. Excellent shopping village with that personal touch from the small business owners that makes all the differance to your shopping experience.
Such a diverse choice of homes that singles, younger and older couples and families all enjoy the benifits of this very well kept secret hideaway. Great place to live if you like the water - boating , fishing or just watching the ebb and flow of the morning tide.
