Reviews of North Melbourne, VIC
"Best infrastructure and green"
Markets, food, friendly neighbours, village vibes, family friendly, verdant and green, hilly and diverse. It’s quiet and has vibrant fauna and flora given its proximity to the city. Amazing area I hope to move back to soon. Great for schools, hospitals and public transport (though also easy to walk to wherever you need to go)

"Hotham Hill"
I’ve lived here for 20 + years in different streets and have a family. Currently living in the Hotham Hill area and love the schools, hospitals, double wide roads with gargantuan trees, proximity to green spaces and excellent food within the suburb and in neighboring flemington and Kensington. I love that it’s cooler in summer because of all the trees and it Takes me 10 minutes to walk to Carlton via leafy parklands and that I go to sleep with the sound of native bird life all around me. If I want to go to the beach, takes me 12 minutes by car. I have a choice of 2, about to be 3 train stations and 3 tram lines. I also love the diversity of the suburb, I see some people have marked it down because sure - there’s housing commission flats but I’ve never been bothered by the folk there, had some interesting conversations on the trams and my kid has a wide understanding and appreciation of different cultures and is a better person for it. The suburbs food options also reflect this panorama of cultural diversity. This suburb is a diamond and it just keeps getting better.

"Great place to raise a family"
Living here for over 5 years now. Initially rented and after couple of years bought a house. We previously lived in Point Cook and then in Eastern suburbs but living in North Melbourne is the best. Residents are friendly and down to earth unlike the pretentious people in Eastern suburbs. Every thing is close by and you can walk or bike to the city, vic market and some of the best primary and secondary schools in Melbourne. We have been saving money as no travel costs to work. Great place.

"Most underrated suburb in Melbourne!"
Amazing value if you are comparing other suburbs within the same proximity to the CBD.
Still so much growth potential!!
"Definitely up there with one of the best suburbs in Melbourne"
Great area that is close to the CBD. Plenty of Cafes and Restaurants also available within minutes away. Close to Victoria Market too, which has plenty of amazing shops.

"Great for Foodies"
It’s difficult to choose a single word to encapsulate North Melbourne’s brand. It has not got the “hip” factor of a Fitzroy/Collingwood or the “village” appeal of an Albert Park/Middle Park - but it does share some of their attractive characteristics inc. easy access to the CBD (circa 2km), & an impressive & diverse range of cafes & restaurants etc. My favourite cafes - Fandango & Auction Rooms & for dinner – Sosta Cucina. A LARGE suburb by area, while it has definitely gentrified - there are pockets of very bleak Housing Commission & Errol St the heart of the retail precinct can at times feel a bit confronting due to some of the druggie, homeless element. The suburb still has a far more “working class” feel than many of its nearby neighbours. Its housing stock has a significant number of Victorian, Edwardian & other historic housing mixed with warehouse conversions & newly built multi-unit townhouses & apartments. For foodies walkability to Victoria Market’s food offerings is a real bonus. As the CBD drifts westward towards Docklands - North Melbourne is well positioned to benefit. Easy access to Citylink/freeway system is a plus. It offers a relatively affordable latte lifestyle! & significantly more affordable than nearby Parkville, Carlton, Fitzroy. "Walk to everywhere"
Living in North Melbourne has been a godsend on my life & couldn't be happier now that i'm living so close to the CBD & practically everything in Melbourne is 15 mins or less of a drive. I recommend for people of all walks of life, forget everything you knew about North Melbourne as a ghetto in the 80's & 90's. It's nothing like that nowadays, not even close.
Great for
- Affordable homes
- Churches
- Good priced resteraunts
- Heritage buildings, park access, eclectic shopping and dining
- Proximity to CBD and tertiary institutes

"Good Value for money & good quality of life"
North Melbourne offers good bang for your buck when you take into account the price-tags on homes in other neighborhood close to the CBD. It clearly sets itself apart from the Kensington & Flemmington area. The traffic is lousy at peak hour, however with that being said practically every neighborhood has lousy traffic flow nowadays.
Great for
- Heritage buildings, park access, eclectic shopping and dining
- Close to CBD, hospitals, shops & Schools
- Huge capital growth
- University High School catchment
Not great for
- Peak hour traffic
- Commission housing

"Not your typical inner city suburb"
North Melbourne presents another element of inner city living as opposed to your typical inner suburbs. For example, given that it borderlines a multi-hospital precinct along Flemington rd in Parkville to the north, borderlines Queen Victoria Market along Victoria st in West Melbourne to it's south. And University of Melbourne 1km to it's north-east, and finally 1.5 km to the south east is the Central business district, no other inner city suburb is wedged between that much infrastructure.
Great for
- Capital growth
- Excellent public transport
- Good value for money for a suburb so close to the CBD
- Heritage buildings, park access, eclectic shopping and dining
- Proximity to CBD and tertiary institutes
- University High School catchment
- Close to the Queen Victoria Markets.
Not great for
- Peak hour traffic

"Certainly no Toorak, but its still up there with the best suburbs in Melbourne"
As a former resident and a future resident, North Melbourne will always be special to me. Close to everything, the CBD, shops, plazas, schools, airport, hospital & tram stops all over the place. Living so central & inner city truly has it's perks. Good capital growth for property resale, doesn't get much better than that.
Great for
- Massive gentrification & more to follow
- Close to CBD, Airport, Hospitals, Plaza's, Banks, Restaurants & Retail
- Good capital growth & re-sale value
- Heritage buildings, park access, eclectic shopping and dining
- Apartments
- Close to the Queen Victoria Markets.
- University High School catchment
Not great for
- Peak hour traffic
- Commission housing

"Heritage, style and convenience"
My family settled in North Melbourne a few years ago, having built a townhouse on one of the more attractive and secluded lanes in the area. It really has turned out to be a great decision for us with all the advantages of inner city living and the upmarket trends.
The area is excellent for singles, couples and families with teenagers. Yet recently it appears that families with younger children are thriving and rounding out the neighborhood in the most positive way.
Within close proximity are excellent restaurants including French, Italian and Asian. North Melbourne Primary, University High School, Melbourne University and RMIT are in walking distance. There are bike lanes, numerous public transportation options, various parks and proximity to Royal Park. There is easy access to shopping and nightlife being centrally located to Carlton, Docklands and the CBD. All the convenience without the downsides.
Great for
- University High School catchment
- Proximity to CBD and tertiary institutes
- Heritage buildings, park access, eclectic shopping and dining
Not great for
- Need more facilities for young children

"Edge of the city!"
Along with suburbs like Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond, North Melbourne offers a true city-edge lifestyle with all the benefits of living a kilometre or two from the heart of town. It also has its own epicentre of cultural activity around the vibrant Errol Street district with its choice of fine restaurants, cafés and boutique shops plus there are the exciting sights, smells and sounds of world-famous Queen Victoria Market. Public transport options within the suburb are excellent with multiple tram and train services enabling the briefest of journeys into the CBD – if there isn’t time to walk! Citylink access at either Dynon or Racecourse Roads also provides locals with excellent access to Melbourne’s extensive freeway/tollway system. Given the number of quality education facilities in the area and its zoning to University High School, North Melbourne is a very popular destination for families, and although the suburb is full of 19th century single-front homes and modern warehouse/factory conversion townhouses, there are a significant number of larger abodes to accommodate these larger households. Its proximity to Melbourne University also makes North Melbourne a popular investment area with a constant stream of students looking to rent close to the uni precinct.

"Our Little Inner City Secret"
We've been living here for almost 4 years.
We love the proximity to everything and public transport.
The community is on the whole friendly, unpretentious and there is a strong creative leaning.
We've met some lovely people through my wife's mothers group, which vindicated our decision to buy in the area.
Since moving into the area, we've seen some great independent businesses open like The Auction Rooms, Di Bellas, All The King's Men and The French Quarter, which is as good a patisserie as you would find anywhere in Melbourne.
We have great restaurants like the Court House Hotel and Libertine. The local Fish and Chips shop is clean and tasty.
Errol Street has a village like feel to it, but like most inner city areas, it is often ruined by dodgy characters, who often hassle you for money.
There is nothing worse that stepping out of the local IGA and being confronted by an aggressive druggie asking you for change.
I know this is unavoidable if you choose to live in the inner suburbs, but I wish there was a greater police presence and the city council spent more time and money addressing this issue, as opposed to hassling the local shops to remove pavement displays.

"Only place I've ever been robbed."
Don't get me wrong, I loved living in North Melbourne, I lived in three different streets over my time there. It was great 'cause I could walk to work in West Melbourne, Errol St is fantastic for quirky shops and some true culinary delights, it is so close to the city that it is easy to take part in all the city has to offer.
The downside is that I got robbed there, even with quite good security, and I had a small fire in my flat (when I wasn't home) that all my neighbours pretty much ignored, not a single call to the fire brigade? So perhaps lacking in community spirit...

"A great little village within walking distance to Melbourne"
A friendly village where people get to know you. Has all we want, transport, good shops, good pubs and restaurants, and so close to the Queen Vic markets for all fresh food and everything else. We wouldn't live anywhere else.

"A good inner city area"
Smaller inner city houses fill this area which makes it ideal for couples and young professionals working in the city.
Its a short walk into the city or if you don't feel like walking, an easy tram ride.
With access to city shops this is a great place to be. But the Errol Street shops are around the corner and there are a number of local cafes and restaurants to eat out.
