I lived here and discovered my neighbours were snooping around my house when I was out. They had a key to the property from the previous tenant who was an old man who they "looked after". I discovered many items missing. Further to this I would say the locals are parochial, insular and reminded me of magpies drawn to a shiny object. Nice when they want something. It is preferably a place you stop off on your way to somewhere else. Lovely views. The best view is in the rear view mirror.

The oldest british settled rural municipality in Australia by a royal marine, shepherd families and convicts. Originally of the Great Oyster Bay tribe who inhabited the area for 40000 years.
A Chinese consortium has bought 3500 hectares of Cambria estate about to be developed into a timeshare holiday town. And wedding and conference venue with golf courses and restaurants etc. Controversial. Proposed 240 berth marina development and peninsula housing development on existing golf course controversial.

Other subdivisions occurring on southern end and town centre.

Swansea has currently about 700 inhabitants, mainly geriatric and retired. Work: Agriculture, seasonal hospitality, medical and trades. Hospital, dental service, old people's home. Fire SES station, school, a few hotels, 2 caravan parks, backpacker lodge which is the only spot for camping. Cafes, info centre, heritage museum, op shop, two v expensive and under stocked super markets with sprouting green potatoes, pineapples for 12 dollars and past the sell by date on many items of food. One does hardware camping fishing items. Two expensive fuel stations. One hardware store. Golf course, tennis court, bowls, fishing. Art gallery and library . Refuse centre, earth moving company and local builder, electrician, plumber.

In dire need of a good food supermarket, vege shop and butcher.

Many air b&bs and holiday houses. Mostly owned and lived in.Very few rental properties available. Mainly air b&bs. Holiday spot for locals and visitors.

Shortage of rental properties at present means gap in the market. Rents are 250 p/week upwards. Properties overpriced 350000 average.

On town water (which is scarce), town sewer and town electricity. Nearby dolphin sands is on septic tank and water tanks and that area is a fire prone area due to surrounding bush.

Swansea:
Geographically on edge of great oyster bay overlooking freycinet peninsula. Near moulting lagoon.
A stop off point for those travelling north or south along highway.
Very dry area. Sheep farms, vineyards, walnuts.

Beautiful coastline and fishing, walking and nature.

Endangered species here: Swift parrot, masked owl, hooded plover, white bellied sea eagle, wedge tail eagle.

1.5hrs to launceston/hobart/st Helens
40 mins to bicheno

Locals like most small town people are restricted to gossip, so don't expect literary conversation.
