Upwey, VIC 3158

Having lived in Upwey for 12 years, the longest time I have ever lived in one place, I ❤ Upwey. It is the best of all worlds. Country like living but close enough to everything that you may need to access. Beautiful views and nature, fresh, crisp air, the smell of woodfires, the variety and sound of birds. It really is like being on a permanent holiday living with peace and beauty. Upwey community is accepting and safe, and most people living here have been here for generations. I was warned by a fellow Upweyian 12 years ago to watch out for getting root bound. I am happily root bounded and would not consider living anywhere else.

Its very quiet and boring

Upwey is a gem of a town . Living here feels like being in a bed-and-breakfast all of the time. The views are spectacular, eateries abound, and access to everything is pretty easy most of the time. The town is east of Melbourne about 35kms beyond all the middle suburban sprawl. It's a little paradise in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges sitting before the tourist spots, calm and peaceful with all the beauty of the dandenongs. Surrounded by national parks, spectacular views, and nice drives through the woods, there are also plenty of places to enjoy the arts without the city hussle and bustle. Burrinja Arts Center is close and has lots of art, plays, music, and a great little cafe. Upwey township also has good cafes, restaurants and take-away foods (indian, thai, chinese, pizza, etc) and a small IGA supermarket. Head further up the mountain to the wonderful spots of Sassafras and Olinda, or back into the city by train or drive (takes about 50 minutes). The blocks of land are big and houses have mixed styles ranging from wooden cabins to very modern constructions sitting atop hills looking back out over the city. The Angliss Hospital is a good. Upwey is a great place for kids with plenty of room to run, climb, and grow. A yearly billy-cart race in the high street ads to the community spirit.

My boyfriend and I bought our first home in Upwey almost 2years ago, and now we are converted hills people. Its forest meets urban, family friendly, pet friendly, neighborly / community orientated.
The only problems we have had is building permits as there are lots of landslip overlays. Can be very wet and chilly in winter - coonara's are a must have! Summers are cooler than inner city suburbs. Public transportation needs work however parking at train stations is easy, just bare in mind it is a max of 1hour 4mins to city 53mins express.
We could easily move to a larger house in belgrave/selby as suburbs in area are very close to one another. And you get a beautiful unique house with plenty of land for a very affordable price.

We recently moved to Upwey from Moonee Ponds and could not be happier. Everything we could possibly need is nearby. There are so many schools to ick from in the area, Upwey alone has 2 public rim art schools. It is green and beautiful. We love sitting outside and listening to the kookaburras. There is so much to do in the local area, and it feels like there is always some sort of event close by to attend. We've found everyone to be really friendly and happy to have a chat, and it feels safe. Upwey has a train station so it makes getting to the city easy, or by car it usually takes me about an hour to get to work. I am so happy that we moved here. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we could buy a house in a nice suburb with a train line for under $400k. It really does feel like Melbourne's best kept secret. We love Upwey!

We have lived in Upwey for 10 years and can say that it is a great place that has been immune from the block splitting / over development that has occurred along the corridor into the city. It has a great mix of small dwellings / units as well as larger lifestyle properties. The schools are really good with great open space and views that you just cannot get in closer to the city. There is a real community spirit with events such as the Billy Cart race and the ANZAC parade which closes the main street to traffic. You have a great chat and catchup with neighbours and other school parents. Public transport is adequate with fantastic parking for the station (I can still get a park at 8am unlike further down the line where the carparks fill up by 7am) as well as bus services that take you directly to Knox and even Monash University. Sporting is well catered for with 2 tennis clubs as well as football and netball. The new performing arts centre (Burringa) is massive and well utilised by local artists etc. I was lucky to find a flat block of almost an acre and the views over the Lysterfield Valley inspire me going to work and coming home.

We moved here from the Eastern suburbs 7 years ago and haven't looked back!  Moving to the hills was the best decision we ever made: you can't get the amazing community spirit, the beautiful nature, the unique character and feel of  the hills down in suburbia. Not only that, but I think Upwey is the best township in the hills!  

Upwey is the best of both worlds- the bush and the city.  We are on the train line to the city, we are a 10 min drive to the biggest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere (Knox), the Angliss hospital is a couple of minutes down the hill, knox private is 20 mins, Upwey village is the only hills village off a main road yet has the most shops and a village feel, the homes have character and privacy, the streets are green and has a bush feeling, the wildlife is awesome, the local schools are wonderful, the parks are beautiful and the home prices are fantatic!  Better get in before the property prices skyrocket.

We moved here six years ago from Carlton as a young couple to buy our first home. We chose Upwey for its beauty, proximity to the city and affordability. Since moving here Upwey has only improved with new yummy cafes excellent vietnamese and pizza restaurants. We live 5 mins walk from the main street/train station on a big block with stunning views of the city and port phillip bay. There's absolutely no way we could have afforded the same quality of life we have here living in the city. Upwey has a brilliant community vibe with the market, billy cart race and cfa jumble sale featuring as events where everyone gets together. It really is a hidden gem and a beautiful place to live. We love Upwey!

Upwey is where I first fell in love with Australia in the late 1970s. I have periodically visited the town since then and I can honestly say that it only got better over the years. While it is as beautiful a location now as it was then, the amenities as well as the road and rail links to Melbourne CBD are even better now.

Upwey is a very inviting town. It has a fantastic village feel with a great sense of community involvement. It is so nice to still find a town in which people are happy to say hello and offer a smile as you pass them by. The local cafes are flourishing and an addition of a new country style bakery adds plenty. Also the thai restaurant is second to none. All is at easy reach- movies 3 mins away in Belgrave, great restaurants up the hill as well as the wonderful natural parks etc on your doorstep. We are a young couple and find the car ride into town quite reasonable due to the proximity to freeways etc. If your after a relaxed lifestyle with a little earthy/cosmopoliton feel then Upwey has much to offer.

Eclectic mix of expensive and cheap houses and similar mix of people. A lot of professionals live in the area catching the train into to city for work. Upwey is still very affordable and you can beat the value for money you get here. We bought our home five years ago after renting in Oakleigh and for under $300K we bought a 4bed + study house on 1600m2. House is now worth $450-$500K which is good growth but still affordable compared to the Melb average ($600K in 2010). House next door to ours recently sold for $270K.
We love the proximity of the village, public transport, shops, medical facilities, recreational areas, and childcare.

Lived here now for about 7 years... absolutely love it and wouldn't consider moving down the hill again.
Even in Winter it is a lovely place to live... the seasons are all represented so beautifully in the hills and you never tire of it.
Access down the hill is available Via Burwood Highway to Ferntree Gully or via Glenfern Road through to Rowville.
We are still close to all services and even have a hospital just down the road.
Schools are friendly and not too crowded.
Plenty of clubs and recreational activities available if you care to look.

My husband and I moved to upwey 3 years ago from inner city melbourne, we wanted some land & a large family house we could grow into. Have not looked back, we love Upwey and have come to really love the 'easy' lifestyle it affords us!
The air is fresh, people are friendly and dont judge you by the car you drive!! It really is a lovely place to bring up your children.
Being at the 'foothills' of the ranges also gives you the choice of lots of different schools in Melbourne, lots of places to visit and if you need anything Knox is only 15 mins away!

We love it, you get so much for your dollar - i dont think we could ever live inner burbs now, not only would we have to downsize considerably but I just dont think i could do the noise/crowds thing again!

Upwey has to most amazing vibe. Everyone knows everyone and is a great place to create some long lasting friendships
