Reviews of Wowan, QLD
"Base for mine workers. Great place to bring up kids."
Town went into steep decline a few decades ago when the butter factory, the egg & poultry industry and the railway line closed down but the town managed to survive, mainly because it is within striking distance (1 to 2 hours) of many of the mines and of Rockhampton and Biloela (less than an hour each). Plenty of work in the region for those prepared to travel (the roads are good but watch out for speed cameras). Employment prospects in new metals mines being planned still unclear. Quite prosperous graziers and grain farmers in the area but they don't employ very many. CQ University is on northern (opposite) side of Rockhampton so allow an hour and quarter to get there with peak-hour traffic in Rockhampton itself.
Good cheap houses for self-starter renovators with a bit of cash and some skill. Don't waste your time begging for finance (banks and finance companies are flat out finding Wowan on the map).
Great for
- Multi Purpose Centre (clinic and community facility)
- Excellent primary school; bus to high school. Local museum.
- Pub. Police. Post Office. Shop & fuel. Bowls Club.Golf Club.
Not great for
- Unfashionable - so banks sneer at Wowan.
- Garage still closed after management dispute.
- No public transport
