Woolgoolga

"Beautiful...and growing"

Where I grew up. The views off the headland are second to none, as are the beaches. Aside from a few unavoidable small town issues, this is the place to be.

  • Close to Coffs Harbour
  • Great for outdoor activities
  • Quiet and freindly

Sunnybank

"Ritzy and quiet"

In my short time living at Sunnybank, I found it to be a nice place to live, but a lot of the community didn't like to mix. The local Rugby League club, however is as passionately followed and played for as any around. Public transport services the area as well as any suburb. Also, it's located nicely. Not to far from the CBD, but not too close. And, there is Griffith University not too far away at Mt Gravatt too.

Great for

  • Chinese Restaurant at Sunnybank Plaza
  • Sporting clubs
  • Quiet neighbourhoods

Not great for

  • No real sense of community
  • Mains Road can get very busy in peak hour

Port Pirie

"Nice people...Poor environmental footprint"

The people, for the most part, are very friendly and helpful. There's a strong sense of community within the town, signaled by the many community-based events in place. Relative to Australian towns of similar size and geographical position, Port Pirie is a bargain buy. For under $200,000 you can pick up a nice 3 bedroom home for the family. Despite these great qualities, Pirie cannot hide from the fact it has a Lead producing smelter sitting down the end of the main street. While a lot of money is put into an initiative called "Ten For Them" (goal is to keep young children's lead levels below 10 Micrograms per decilitre of blood), there are many kids with alarmingly high levels. But, provided kids maintain good hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle, dangerous levels can be avoided. The only positive aspect the smelter brings, is healthy employment. It currently provides a couple of thousand workers with employment. My personal tip if you are looking to buy in Port Pirie is try to buy as far from the smelter as possible. It really is a nice place once you get past the enigma of the smelters.

Great for

  • People
  • Wide variety of sports
  • Flinders Ranges

Not great for

  • Nyrstar Lead Smelter
  • High Unemployment
