Glenwood

"Small town"

A small town About half way between Maryborough and Gympie on the Bruce Highway, although with a population of around 1260(2011 census) and mostly acreage lots, it has a quiet rural feel about it.

Great for

  • A handy location, 1hour to Hervey Bay or Noosa
  • 30 minutes to Maryborough or Gympie
  • Good prices and some decent houses still available

Not great for

  • Bruce highway is in bad condition
  • Not a lot of services here, local IGA but overpriced.

Who lives here?

  • Families with kids
  • Retirees
  • LGBT+
  • Country Lovers

Does Glenwood have sand flies !!

waynel

No, too far from the coast. I live at Glenwood and while I love the Fraser/Cooloola coasts, I'm quite happy to drive home through the state forest to escape the sandies. Often a bit cooler and less muggy than the coast, too.

Hi , whats the soil like at Glenwood? And can you cut down the pines and plants natives? Also what is the closest swimming beach or creek from Glenwood? Thanks Vanessa

Do the floods come from Gympie to Glenwood? why are so many houses for sale at the moment is there something that makes Glenwood undesirable to live at? Really need some reassurance i want to move my family there but i dont want to move them to a disaster... Thanks in advance would really appreciate some insight.

Hi alisha , as you can see im above you and have questions too , perhaps there is just alot for sale because it is new ,,i dont seem to be able to find any problems with mining near by . Apparently some sort of big eco tourism is going to happen. There is another post here somewhere addressing flood issues and says there are none, we would like to buy there too ,so if you find out anything good or bad plaeses let me in on it ! Thanks Vanessa

Hi Vanessa and Alisha, I am also from Sydney looking to move North. My concern is employment, do I find a job before i move etc? Looking forward to getting out of the crazy busy lifestyle of Syd. To the bush.
Would love to hear your thoughts ? :)

Just saw this thread of questions. I asked here about sandflies in 2016 and got a helpful reply. Since then I bought a house in Glenwood and haven't regretted. And no sandfly problems.
>>Hi , whats the soil like at Glenwood? And can you cut down the pines and plants natives?
Not a technical soil scientist, but soils vary depending on topography from sandy loam on flats to stoney clay ridges. The lower loams grow natives well. The ridgetop stoney red earths and clays are a bit more selective - they grow the local veg well (e.g. regeneration of spotted gum, white mahogany and Gympie messmate, with acacia understorey), but the normal humid-subtropical garden plants struggle a bit. I've had better success with drier country natives on my ridge, like wattles and kurrajongs, rather than pendas and callistemons etc.
Landowners have been clearing the pines in a lot of Glenwood blocks.
>>Also what is the closest swimming beach or creek from Glenwood?
There are swimming holes on local creeks but availability depends on recent rain. Nearest coastal beaches are Rainbow Beach (surf) or Tin Can Bay (sheltered), an hour through the forest. En route there's a permanent freshwater creek on the Tin Can Bay road. Pools at Gympie and Tiaro(?), and a Glenwood business has a health centre with a pool (Arborfive Rd.). Petrie Park on the Mary River at Tiaro is popular.
>>Do the floods come from Gympie to Glenwood?
No, the Mary River doesn't come near Glenwood, but can affect Tiaro, the nearest town, and access to Gympie, of course. Local creeks can flash flood, but the water goes down quickly. Caution to be exercised on creek crossings after heavy rain, and if you have a major creek on or at the same level as your block.
>>why are so many houses for sale at the moment is there something that makes Glenwood undesirable to live at?
There seems a high turnover of homeowners - lots of houses for sale, but a building boom at present also. Probably work availability keeps people moving, as in many rural communities. Also it's half an hour to health care, so as people age, they might need to move into town.
The main undesirables for Glenwood are no local industry for employment, and no public transport (there is a school bus). It's like living out-of-town anywhere - nice if your lifestyle suits it, but you need a car and an income.
On the plus side, there are plenty of people living in Glenwood and driving the half hour open highway run south to Gympie, which is a major regional industry centre. The road is good and getting better, it still beats a half-hour commute through traffic in the city, and a 1-2 acre property is a lot cheaper at Glenwood than closer to Gympie.
>>My concern is employment, do I find a job before i move etc?
Depending on your skills, work is available in Gympie (wide range), Tiaro (small service town) and possibly locally in Glenwood in basic services if you're lucky. Local Glenwood and Gunalda businesses include servo, shops, pubs, pharmacy, hairdresser, produce/hardware, mechanic, landscaping/maintenance, council work, school, real estate, and of course agribusiness.
Some residents work away (including me), so it suits the FIFO or travelling worker as a base, as well as cottage industry self-employed.

I was interested in the early History of Glenwood can anyone tell me about the growing of papaws and bananas on the steep east facing slope. It was probably frost free and so was suitable for these tropical crops. I seem to remember in years past at least Papaws growing there. I was interested to know if a family with the surname Ross were one of the farmers of bananas.
