Don't forget the Light Rail next year!!!!
aagghh - just tried replying and it lost it all when it needed me to login! Try again, hopefully more succinct this time...
If driving - there are 3 main routes you would take: Parramatta Rd, City West Link/ANZAC Bridge, and through the back of Annandale to either join ANZAC Bridge at the Crescent, or enter the city via Glebe/Ultimo (Pyrmont Bridge Rd). At that time of day, each of those routes will have traffic, I would guess depending on where you are in the city, 30-40 mins door to door. My suggestion would be to plug in the route in Google Maps at the time of day you would be travelling, and it will give you an estimated time in current traffic. Try doing it a few days and it will give you a reasonable sense.
For bus - very much depends on where in the city you are going. I have been working at Circular Quay for a few years, which is at the end/start of the bus line. It is therefore very influenced by traffic. On the way in, I would say it averages around 35 minutes to where I get off the bus (Bridge St), with a range anywhere from 25/30 mins to 45 mins. On the way home - much more variable, sometimes over an hour if the traffic is bad. If it is, I generally start walking down George St, until the traffic is moving better - the furthest I've gotten is Chinatown! I think average home travel time would be 40-45 mins. All that said - if your work is anywhere south of King Street - esp if it is as far south as Town Hall - it would be a much different experience in terms of time - shave 5-10 mins off in the morning, and 10-15 in the evening.
The other option is train - Petersham station is about a 10 minute walk from the Norton/Parramatta Rd intersection, so depending on where you will be coming from, it is potentially a more reliable option, and quicker.
Last thing - be conscious that much of Leichhardt is timed or metered parking. If you are not living in the suburb, then you'll have a bit of a walk to drop off on Norton St and park all day. I live in the area between Marion and P'matta Road, and the closest you can get to Norton St around here is west of Elswick Street. Maybe work out where you would aim to park and then check out on google maps streetview, and/or the map on this link: http://www.leichhardt.nsw.gov.au/?ArticleID=522#Leichhardt Free Parking (though it looks pretty confusing - even to me, and I live here!!).
Good luck with the move!
