West Lawn is decent enough for public transportation, and I know a fair number of residents commute via bus or train to The Loop and other parts of the city.

Yes. You'll have plenty of options to get to downtown or any other parts of the city. West Lawn has access to Orange Line trains as well as several bus lines. You can get downtown in less than an hour on the train.
